Paris. The Indian men’s hockey team beat Australia 3-2 in the men’s hockey Pool B match at the Paris 2024 Olympics. It is India's first victory in this fixture at the Olympics since Munich 1972.
India scored twice in two minutes - Abhishek (12’) and Harmanpreet Singh (13’) - in the first quarter at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium. Thomas Craig (25’), however, converted a penalty corner in the second to bring the Kookaburras back into the match.
Harmanpreet (32’), then, doubled his goal tally for the match in the third quarter. Blake Govers’ late penalty (55’) ensured a nerve-wracking end to the contest. But India held their own to collect the three points.
The Tokyo 2020 bronze medallists secured more possession (54%), but Australia made 37 attacking circle penetrations, 17 more than India.
With the win, India displaced Australia to claim second spot in Pool B with three wins, two draws and one defeat. The Kookaburras finished third with three wins and two losses.
Reigning Olympic champions Belgium are the group toppers while Argentina complete the top four.
The men’s hockey quarter-finals at the Paris 2024 Olympics are scheduled to begin on August 4.
