Dr. Manan Vora: 84% of IT employees in India have a damaged liver — and most don’t even know it.
A new study from the University of Hyderabad confirms Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) is now an epidemic in India’s IT sector:
- 84% of IT employees are already affected.
- 71% are clinically obese.
- 34% have metabolic syndrome (diabetes, high BP, abnormal cholesterol)
This is a lifestyle disease, and you should be concerned if you follow these habits: Sitting 8+ hours daily
Sleeping <6 hours everyday
Consuming 2 sugary drinks/week (+45% risk)
Increasing belly fat - Waist over 90 cm (men) or 80 cm (women)
Fatty liver progresses silently until it's too late, potentially leading to:
- Liver inflammation → Chronic damage
- Fibrosis → Scarring of liver tissue
- Cirrhosis → Permanent damage requiring a liver transplant
- Liver cancer → The final, deadly stage
As a doctor, I wish more people realise this — Your deadlines, meetings, and late-night grind WILL NOT matter if your health fails.
So fix it before it’s too late:
▶︎ 1. Get a liver check-up (ultrasound & LFT detect early damage)
▶︎ 2. Avoid sugar & refined carbs when you can (Moderation is key)
▶︎ 3. Move every hour (even 5-minute breaks help)
▶︎ 4. Prioritise protein & fibre (helps burn excess liver fat)
▶︎ 5. Fix your sleep (sleep deprivation damages liver more than alcohol)
Most people only realise the value of health when they lose it. But don't wait until your body forces you to stop.
